Download Tumblr GIFs the easy way
Tumblr is the one large platform where GIF still means GIF. The site's culture is built on gifsets — multi-panel scene edits posted as real .gif files — and Tumblr keeps them in that container instead of quietly converting to video the way most feeds now do.
So a gifset gives you actual .gif files, one per panel, each with its own button. That's what makes them reusable anywhere GIFs are accepted, and it's also why they're large: a real GIF stores every frame as a full palette-indexed image.
Tumblr links that work here
- Classic blog URLs: name.tumblr.com/post/12345…
- New-style URLs: tumblr.com/name/12345…
- Blogs on custom domains (the blog runs on its own address)
- Share links copied from the Tumblr app
What can't be downloaded from Tumblr
- More colours or resolution than the palette-indexed original holds
- Posts where the apparent GIF is really a looping video — those save from the video page
- Gifsets on hidden blogs or behind the mature-content wall
What quality you get from Tumblr
The stored .gif at the dimensions posted, with original frame timing and loop behaviour intact — usually 268px, 400px or 540px wide, the widths Tumblr themes have used over the years. Colour is limited to a 256-entry palette; that's a property of the GIF format and the reason gradients look banded.
GIF posts, one loop or a whole set
Tumblr artists often post GIFs in sets — six reaction loops in one photoset, or a scene cut into panels. Paste the post link and every GIF in the set shows up with its own button, in order, so you can save one panel or the lot.
Older posts are almost always true .gif files; newer ones sometimes come back as short MP4 loops because that is what Tumblr now stores. Either way the loop is preserved exactly as it plays on the dashboard.
If a download doesn't work
Tumblr failures are almost always a hidden blog, a deleted post, or a login-walled mature flag — test the link in a private browser tab first.
If a public GIF still fails, Tumblr may have changed how its pages work — tell us through the contact page and we'll get it working again. That's on us, not you.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Tumblr downloader free?
Yes. Every download on hhhdownload is free, and there's no limit on how many GIFs you can save.
Do I need an account or the Tumblr app?
No. This page runs on its own in your browser — you never sign in to Tumblr here, and there's no app or extension to install.
Where does the file save to?
On a computer it goes to your Downloads folder. On a phone, check your Downloads or Files app (on iPhone, look in Files › Downloads).
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The same page works in Safari, Chrome and every modern mobile browser.
Can you download private GIFs from Tumblr?
No. Hidden and dashboard-only blogs never render a public page, so there's nothing there for any downloader to read.
Do I get a real .gif file?
Usually yes — most Tumblr GIFs really are .gif files, and that's what you save. Some newer posts use short MP4 loops instead; when that's what Tumblr stores, that's what you get.
